This inner city harbourside suburb has undergone one of the area’s most notable gentrifications over the past decade, with a dramatic transformation of this former working class area.
Most significant was the redevelopment of Finger Wharf, which has become a premier destination for anyone visiting Sydney. Retaining much of its original industrial aesthetic, this landmark development now plays host to luxurious apartments, renowned restaurants such as Otto, China Doll and the Ovolo Hotel (formerly the Blue Hotel).
Still drawing crowds late into the night, the immortalised pie cart Harry’s Café de Wheels remains next to the wharf, while the naval ships still docking at Fleet Base are a constant reminder of Woolloomooloo’s traditional shipping heritage.
Given its diminutive size, Woolloomooloo is home to quite a number of pubs, including the fashionably refurbished Tilbury and the grungy Old Fitzroy, with its tiny but well-known live theatre venue. Less than 1km from the CBD, Woolloomooloo is bordered by The Domain parkland on its western border and cosmopolitan Potts Point to the east.
While the suburb is now home to a number of high-profile celebrities, it still retains some of its grittier urban appeal, with the vibrant entertainment precinct of Kings Cross on its south-eastern border.
Real estate in Woolloomooloo consists of all manner of apartments, including some luxurious multi-million dollar harbourside offerings, along with a few streets lined with traditional Victorian terraces, more and more of which are being stylishly renovated.
Its proximity to the city has made it increasingly popular with executives who can enjoy an easy 20 minute stroll through the picturesque expanse of the Royal Botanic Gardens into the heart of the CBD.
